DOG INSIGHTS…

“Bite inhibition is a learned response in which the dog consciously inhibits the full force of his biting ability”. This is a critical component in behavior development and dogs must learn to use their teeth properly. Generally, dogs learn bite inhibition by the age of 4.5 months. Most dogs display bite inhibition when they are playing together, and even when engaging in a fight with another dog. By helping dogs learn bite inhibition when they are young puppies, you can help avoid bite incidents involving other dogs as well as people.

When watching dog training shows on television, be conscious of the fact that a great deal of editing is done to create the illusion of ‘perfect’ outcomes. Often, “results” are attained through more manipulated means than the audience is led to believe and the final product can be a misleading and contrived representation based only on select footage. The allure of do-it-yourself dogtraining based on these often falsified representations has created a culture ofdog guardians who expect to fix their own dog in half an hour, relying solely on condensed t.v. methods. This is often a frustrating, unrealistic and potentially dangerous reality for many viewers who don’t have the benefit of understanding the potential for deleterious side effects. Please consult a reputable trainer to get a thorough grasp of any methods you are considering using with your dog, especially those requiring the use of physical force.

Don’t forget to book your dog in for their yearly checkup with the veterinarian.
