DOG INSIGHTS…

Regular visits to your vet can be a fabulous training opportunity – once your dog has completed its vaccinations, ask if you can drop in for 5 minutes and use this as an opportunity to acclimatize your dog to the surroundings and staff. Offer your dog treats in the reception area and if they are comfortable, ask the staff to give your dog treats as well. It’s that simple! These short visits will pay off down the line as it is much easier for everyone involved to work with a dog that is comfortable being at the vet’s office. Most office staff will be happy to oblige and help with this process.

It is normal for adult dogs to become more wary of their environment unless they are given regular opportunities to explore novel surroundings as well as meeting unfamiliar dogs and people. Older dogs become increasingly less accepting of the
world in general and especially of strange, scary and unfamiliar stimuli. Be sure to give your adult dog plenty of time to adjust to  new situations and don’t hesitate to employ classical conditioning to build positive associations when introducing dogs to new experiences or people.
